Important information about Firmware Upgrades to your printer!!

Recently a few printer manufacturers have released firmware upgrades that will make compatible / aftermarket chips not usable. Because this is a firmware upgrade (software inside the printer) it can't really be removed by the user once these updates have been installed and unfortunately, if you have allowed an upgrade to take place, you will have to resort to using genuine OEM cartridges until such times as this issue can be rectified.

In order to avoid this issue initially, when you install your printer driver you will see a prompt or small tick box asking you if you want automatic upgrades. This by default is set to ON and if you choose to use compatible / aftermarket cartridges, then you need to change this to OFF. You may need to look for it, as in most cases it’s not prominently displayed.

Anyone who has been using compatible / aftermarket cartridges previously and wishes to avoid this problem in the future, will also need to follow the advice given above, providing that you have not updated your printer drivers or allowed a firmware upgrade to take place on your printer.

Having turned the automatic updates to OFF, there are other ways the firmware can be updated.

1. Installing a new printer driver will most likely install a new firmware version as well.

2. Installing a newer operating system like windows 7 can automatically install a later driver. Many printer drivers are included in operating systems these days and upon installation the printer will be detected and the driver and firmware will be installed from the disk automatically.

So, in order to use compatible/aftermarket cartridges, remember these two important steps.

1. Turn off automatic updates.
2. Do not install newer printer drivers unless absolutely necessary.
